Poltips Licences
Due to the different requirements of the wide variety of Poltips users, we have created three different
versions of the software. They all utilise the same core software but each one has certain restrictions on features and what can be done with the data computed.
- Standard Version
- Publishers/Custom Version
- User-Data Version
Ensure that you purchase the correct version of the software. If you want to publish the data for resale, you must purchase a publisher's licence. If you have any questions about the licensing of the software or the general terms and conditions, please contact us.
All 3 licences are restricted to a set number of calendar years. Although the software will run
indefinitely, you will only be able to make tidal calculations within the years of the purchased licence.
Standard Version
This version is usually purchased with a 3 or 5 year licence and contains an extensive database of
locations around the UK. The user is allowed to make predictions for the licenced period and these can be used for recreational purposes. Users are not permitted to publish and/or resell the data from the software in any form. Users can distribute tide tables from the software free of charge within a membership club (e.g. sailing club).
The software may have some of the more advanced tide table features disabled, and the data may not be the most up to date available so predictions may vary slightly from the publishers/custom version. For consultancy/engineering use, we highly advise the use of the custom version of Poltips.
Publishing / Custom Version
This licence is purchased on a per port basis, usually with a 2 or 3 year licence. Users are permitted to publish the output from the software in any form and resell this data in any printed publication for which they own the complete copyright (i.e. users cannot purchase the software and then sell the results on to third party publishers). User-Data Version
The software is supplied with no database of harmonics – this licence is designed for users who want to include their own harmonics, or use it in conjunction with our TASK tidal harmonic analysis software. The version is usually purchased with a 3, 5 or 10 year licence.
Publishing Data on the Internet Users of the standard version can publish online 14 days in advance of the current date for one location only.
Users of the publishing/custom or user-data versions of the software can publish data …
on a free to access website for up to 3 months in advance of the current date for all the ports
which they are licenced to use.
on a subscription-based website for the full duration of their Poltips licence.
Checking Your Licence
The details of your licence appear when you first run the software. It is also available at any time by clicking the 'About…' button.
This will show you:
- the start and end year for which tidal data can be computed
- the licence type (standard, publishing/custom, userdata)
- whether it is a full or a demo version of the software
- whether you have permission to install on a network
- whether custom tide tables are available
- whether use of your own harmonic constants is available
- whether you have access to limited ports (listed) or all ports
